C.20 Freedom and Liberation

Definition     Freedom is the external condition of being able to act and choose without undue restraint, while Liberation is the internal state of being free from the prisons of one’s own mind. While you can have external freedom without inner liberation, true and complete freedom is the sacred union of both. It is the profound state where your external life is a reflection of a mind that has been liberated from its own self-imposed limitations, such as fear, conditioning, and attachment.

Spiritual Application     In a spiritual practice, the primary aim is this inner liberation, which makes authentic outer freedom possible. Contemplation is the master key that unlocks the chains of our own making. Through mindful self-inquiry, we bring the light of awareness to the unconscious beliefs, reactive patterns, and deep-seated fears that dictate our choices and limit our sense of possibility. The practice is to patiently and compassionately witness these inner prisons until their illusory nature is revealed and their power dissolves.

Ultimate Benefit     The ultimate benefit of this path is the attainment of a truly sovereign existence. It is the liberation from the exhausting and endless cycle of seeking happiness and avoiding pain in the external world. When you are liberated from within, you discover a source of peace and well-being that is not dependent on circumstances. You become free to respond to life with wisdom, love, and creativity, rather than reacting from a place of fear and conditioning. This is the ability to be truly at peace, no matter what is happening around you.

Reflection     As you reflect on this, gently scan the landscape of your life. Where do you feel a lack of freedom? Look closely and see if the primary restraint is an external barrier or an internal belief you hold about yourself or the world. What is the one “I can’t” story that you tell yourself most often, and what might happen if you were to question its absolute truth? Imagine for a moment what it would feel like to move through your day completely free from the need for approval or the fear of judgment. What single choice would you make from that liberated space?
